“Her and I, She and They: Ruby” 6 feet by 2 feet, Acrylic on Canvas (2013)
I have learned that a new experience can pave an unfamiliar path towards artistic growth. This path began with my late grandmother, Ruby Charlotte Watson Marshall. Sitting on her porch, she would watch and listen to the beautiful sounds of the rain in complete solitude. Surrounding myself with these gentle sounds, emotions, and memories of her, I embarked on a personal journey through my artwork. With the passing of my grandmother in December of 2013, I was inspired to create a series of work that would reflect her. Each piece making up this series is a personal reflection: the intimate relationship between “her and I,” the friendly, engaging spirit among “she and they,” and the legacy of “Ruby” embody this work. Through the creation of this series, I became one with the expression of color and sound to reflect emotion.
