What does it mean to be "All American"?

As the United States marks 250 years of history, ALL AMERICAN considers the enduring role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in shaping the nation’s cultural landscape. Born from exclusion but sustained through generations of artists, scholars, and cultural workers, HBCUs have educated visionaries whose contributions continue to shape the American story.

Bringing together the work of more than thirty current HBCU students and alumni, this exhibition reflects a wide range of artistic practices, perspectives, and career stages. Rather than presenting a singular vision of Black creativity, ALL AMERICAN celebrates the richness and complexity of an artistic legacy that continues to evolve across classrooms, studios, and communities throughout the country.

Juried by Artist Programs Manager Alexandra Jane, Creative Director Jonh Blanco, and current HBCU Alumni Artist-in-Residence Lamar Whidbee, the exhibition recognizes both emerging voices and established practices while honoring the lasting impact of HBCUs on contemporary art.
